FMES 2026

Three takeaways from my panel on food security amid geopolitical turmoil at the annual RSMED 2026, organized by Institut FMES in Toulon, France. 1. Food security is national security. Gas, fertiliser, harvest and shipping shocks form a „cascade“, each amplifying the next amid Global System Rupture. 2. Food is geopolitical power. BRICS+ is not a food OPEC (yet), but its producers, inputs and markets give it strategic leverage. 3. Europe must shape, not just depend on, the supply networks: build strategic partnerships, secure corridors and preserve industrial capacity. Energy security is fertilizer security is food security.
