As a member of the Strategy and Security Policy Advisory Board of the Science Commission at the Austrian Federal Ministry of Defence, I participated in the Board’s second meeting for this year, which focused on the evolving security situation in the Middle East, with particular attention to Iran.
The discussion addressed the regional and global significance of the current conflict dynamics, as well as their potential implications for Austria and Europe. Particular emphasis was placed on the possible consequences for economic stability, energy security, critical infrastructure, migration pressures, and the broader European security environment.
The Austrian Ministry of Defence’s Department for Defence Policy and Strategy also presented a range of conceivable generic scenarios for the region. The members of the Advisory Board subsequently assessed these scenarios according to their probability of occurrence and the potential severity of their consequences.
The exchange demonstrated the importance of structured strategic foresight at a time when developments in the Middle East can rapidly generate cascading effects far beyond the region itself. Escalation involving Iran, disruptions to maritime routes and energy supplies, and the growing interaction between regional conflicts and global power competition could have direct repercussions for European security and economic resilience.
The Strategy and Security Policy Advisory Board regularly examines current issues of strategic and security-policy relevance. Its members are distinguished experts from Austria’s academic and security-policy community who contribute independent expertise, strengthen the exchange between the Ministry and civilian academia, and support evidence-based public communication on security risks.
Through its work, the Advisory Board also contributes to national security awareness by helping to make complex geopolitical developments and their implications more accessible to the broader public.
