Description

In general, few writers have drawn on the research on the Global System from the perspective of combined natural and socio-economic systems. Carl Folke et al. (2002) claim that natural and man-made systems cannot be treated independently as they behave in a dynamic way. Moreover, the authors reveal that there

is a connection between resilience, diversity and sustainability when it comes to socio-ecological systems. In addition, Jianguo Liu (2007) makes the case for connected human and natural systems as well. Furthermore, Bruckmeier (2016) delivers a social- ecological theory, which outlines a sustainable transformation of interacting social and ecological systems. Thus, a research gap can be identified at the theoretical and analytical level in terms of a missing holistic framework of the Global System as a collective term of all major natural and socio-economic subsystems which exhibit interconnected patterns of behavior.
